Environmentally Responsible Wine Packaging

As a consumer, you can easily make green choices every day by selecting environmentally responsible packaging and always recycling empty containers, regardless of their material or deposit status.

Carbon footprint is generated from production, packaging, and transportation, among other things. The carbon footprint naturally decreases the lighter the packaging. At Alko, products in lightweight glass bottles are marked with the appropriate symbol. At Alko, an empty 75 cl wine bottle weighing no more than 420 g is currently considered a lightweight bottle. A sparkling wine bottle is considered lightweight when it weighs no more than 835 g.

In addition to lightweight packaging, FSC or Nordic Swan Ecolabel certification can also confirm a product's environmental friendliness.

In 2017, the Nordic monopolies commissioned a study on the carbon footprint of wine packaging production. Although plastic causes a lot of concern among consumers, PET plastic bottles are a good choice in Finland from an environmental perspective as well, because their recycling rate is exceptionally high, over 90%.
