Cantina Orsogna was founded in 1964 by a small group of winegrowers in Italy's Abruzzo region. It has grown into a cooperative of nearly 500 members, cultivating 1,100 hectares of vineyards. The vineyards are located at an altitude of 432 meters between Majella National Park and the Adriatic Sea. The conditions are ideal for organic farming: sea breezes keep mold at bay, and temperature differences between night and day produce high-quality grapes.
Organic, biodynamic, and vegan
The producer has both organic-certified and Demeter-certified biodynamic production. Currently, 80 percent of the vineyards are organic-certified. Organic vineyards are gradually being converted to biodynamic. Orsogna also holds the international Biodiversity Friend certification for maintaining biodiversity. All wines are also suitable for vegans, which is indicated on the label. Wine labels and shipping boxes are made from recycled materials.
In keeping with their natural approach, only natural cork is used as a closure, and no plastic capsules are used on wine bottles. The corks are secured with naturally made strings, which are tied to the bottles, providing employment for a local workshop community supporting people with developmental disabilities.
WWF partnership
Orsogna is also part of a WWF conservation program. Through this, Orsogna has supported sea turtle conservation and the recovery of the local wolf population, among other initiatives. The WWF conservation program supported by Orsogna changes at regular intervals. Cantina Orsogna is also committed to bee protection, as bees play a key role in maintaining biodiversity. In Cantina Orsogna's vineyards, they are safe from harmful chemicals and perform their important task of pollinating the vines. Biodiversity is thus supported in every possible way. The producer has been Demeter-certified since 2005.
