Baron de Ley created the Varietals range to honour the traditional grape varieties of the Rioja region. Maturana is an old Rioja grape variety, thought to have already been lost. The discovery and revitalisation of the variety with the help of the University of La Rioja is one of the most significant cases in the region in recent years. Maturana gives full-bodied and earthy wine. The Baron de Ley Varietal Maturana is made from hand-picked grapes from the “Finca Alegría” vineyard in the monastery’s vicinity. The wine has been matured in American oak casks for twelve months. The wine has received several awards.

Full-bodied, tanninous, moccha, herbal, and blackberry notes.

Producer story

Bodegas Barón de Ley is a respected Spanish wine producer with over 1000 hectares of vineyards in the Rioja regions of Cenicero, Mendavia, Ausejo, and Carboneras. The headquarters of Barón de Ley is located in Mendavia, within a magnificent building complex constructed in 1548 by the Count of Eguía as his fortress and stronghold. Over the years, the estate transformed from a Benedictine monastery where monks raised sheep and produced wine under their command until 1836. Subsequently, the estate had several powerful owners. After various stages, the property returned to the ownership of Barón de Ley's founders in the 1980s.
